What Is a Medical Coder?

In the field of healthcare, a medical coder is a professional who represents patients’ medical diagnoses to insurance companies in the form of industry-standard billing codes. Because there are so many possible diagnoses with unique details, a strong basis of medical and anatomical knowledge is required, in addition to familiarity with the appropriate codebook (e.g., ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II).

Making sure that the diagnosis is represented correctly is important to both the patient and the medical practice, as it ensures that coverage will be considered for the right conditions and treatments. For this reason, practices often choose to employ medical coders who hold a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification. CPC certification shows that a medical coder has the best possible education and skills to get the job done right.
