Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Below are answers to some of the most common questions we get at ABC Training Center in regards to our CPC training course and the AAPC exam:

What Is a Medical Coder?

In the field of healthcare, a medical coder is a professional who represents patients’ medical diagnoses to insurance companies in the form of industry-standard billing codes. Because there are so many possible diagnoses with unique details, a strong basis of medical and anatomical knowledge is required, in addition to familiarity with the appropriate codebook (e.g., ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II). Making sure that the diagnosis is represented correctly is important to both the patient and the medical practice, as it ensures that coverage will be considered for the right conditions and treatments. For this reason, practices often choose to employ medical coders who hold a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification. CPC certification shows that a medical coder has the best possible education and skills to get the job done right.

Will I receive a certificate prior to taking the AAPC exam?

You will receive a certificate of completion if you complete and pass the AAPC CPC Training Course at ABC Training. You may receive your completion certificate before taking the CPC Exam.  Please do not confuse the certificate of completion with the actual CPC certification.

Is the AAPC exam included in my tuition?  How many re-takes are included?

Yes, the exam is included in your tuition. The tuition includes two attempts.

Would I be able to work with just my CPC certification?

Yes. Medical coding certifications from AAPC are the gold standard in the healthcare industry. Certifications are nationally recognized by employers, physician societies, and government organizations. AAPC medical coding certifications are a must for anyone interested in pursuing a career in medical coding and billing.

How many questions is the AAPC exam/will it be multiple choice?

The exam contains 150 multiple choice questions

What are the prerequisites for the CPC training?  Is our B&C course a pre-req?  How do the 2 programs differ?

Our Billing and Coding course is not a pre-requisite for the AAPC Coding Course.  The AAPC Coding Course does not have any pre-requisites however, a background in medical terminology and anatomy is preferred. Although medical coding and billing is often regarded as a single job, they are two distinct activities. The main task of a medical coder is to review clinical documents and assign standard codes using CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II classification systems. Medical billers perform a different task. Billers process and follow up on claims sent to health insurance companies for reimbursement of services rendered by a healthcare provider. The two programs differ by curriculum. Designed specifically by medical coding professionals and instructors, AAPC’s curriculum will prepare each student for academic and real-world success on the path to CPC certification. Real physician-office medical records are dissected, helping students interpret the documentation, appropriately select codes, and become more accurate and efficient coders.

Where would I be able to work with my CPC certification?

Medical coders work in various settings including but not limited to; hospitals, doctor’s offices, insurance companies, healthcare consulting agencies, law firms and educational institutions.

Why is AAPC a good certification to have?

By certifying as a medical coder, you are beginning your journey towards an in-demand career within the healthcare industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical coding is one of the fastest growing professions in the nation. Additionally, certified medical coders typically earn 20 percent more than non-certified coders.

What is the salary of Certified Medical Coder?

As of May 2017, the median annual wage for medical coders was $39,180 per U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Not only is this above average for all occupations, but salaries for coders can be much higher, depending on your where you live, qualifications, type of employer, and experience. Certified coders who responded to AAPC’s annual salary survey in New York earned an average of over $57,013 in 2018.

What comes with my AAPC membership?

Membership offers significant discounts on all forms of continuing education, helping you maintain professional accreditation’s and keep you up-to-date with the latest in the business of healthcare, including compliance rules, government regulations, and healthcare trends. The AAPC website also regularly lists available job openings. For any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact ABC Training Center!

“I found this school in my search for a coding class where I could have actual contact with the teacher to be able to ask all the questions I knew I was going to have. I just got my CPC results today I passed with flying colors and I owe it all to my teacher Monique Johnson. Her way of teaching and making sure everyone in class understood how the right answer was correct and why speaks volumes, she has a true passion for teaching and you can tell right away. I also want to thank Sherell Hamilton who took time out of her schedule to help our class study and made sure we grasped the coding concept. This course is by no means easy it takes real dedication and time from your part, without it you won’t pass.”

My teacher Sherell Hamilton was an awesome teacher who was very thorough and taught us everything we needed to know on how to pass this exam. “Found this school as an AAPC accredited center to prep for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam. School offers flexible payment options, class schedules & class materials. The class instructor, Sherell Hamilton (CPC, CRC, CPC-I), was very accessible, knowledgeable & understanding. Ms. Hamilton was approachable & encouraged students to know that they can depend not only on her, but also on the entire class for support. I enjoyed the class & appreciate her guidance in helping me pass the CPC certification exam. Highly recommend anyone interested in the certification to join her class.”
